The logic that powers Newsbreaker II today was forged in the high-discipline environment of 1960s British computing. Long before the "cloud" or personal computers existed, I launched Find-a-Car Index. However, my 30-plus years of international business experience allowed me to speak to executives as peers. While younger programmers focused on the "cool" factor of code, I focused on functionality and utility. I understood that for the web to succeed, it had to solve real-world business problems.
The turning point came when I shifted focus from local retail to the technology sector. Novell was the first major titan to adopt my Java-based news delivery system, and once they opened their doors, Silicon Valley followed.
I often found myself as the "oldest man in the room" during meetings with young programming teams. In one instance, a company President remarked that I was nearly as old as the entire dev team combined—which he suggested was why I knew three times what they did. Launched on November 1st, 1995, CreativeContacts.com represented one of the internet's first attempts at a truly interactive professional network. Designed specifically for the commercial photography industry, it moved away from the static, text-heavy pages of the era toward a dynamic, database-driven experience.
The platform allowed photographers to list themselves in a searchable database, providing a tool for photo buyers to research specialists by location and specialty. While we operated with a mantra of "No massive graphics" to accommodate the slow modem speeds of the mid-90s, the site offered extended listings that allowed for four pictures and direct URL links—a precursor to modern portfolio platforms like LinkedIn or Behance.
Following the logic of searchable directories, we developed Citibase, an "Internet Yellow and Whitepage Database for Cities". While most municipal homepages at the time were merely static links to chambers of commerce, Citibase was designed as a unique, interactive database for cities with populations up to 1,000,000.
